The points below represent houses in Chittenden County, Vermont, around the Burlington area. Yellow dots are houses in the year 2000, and red dots show houses by the year 2004. When overlayed with each other, we see where developments have been built over the course of just four years. One of the largest developments is pulled out in the image below. As expected, most of these new homes are outside of town centers, adding to the continuous sprawl of the region around Burlington. These data come from the Vermont Center for Geographic Information (VCGI).

Sprawl’s bad enough in New Jersey. It would be a true shame if Vermont didn’t learn from our mistakes.

John, that site is really great. All should check it out. Just by clicking on one of the large red areas in the map, a bird’s eye view of gigantic McMansions shows up in the window to the right. Nicely done!

We can only hope the collapse of the housing bubble will slow the development of… development. It would be neat if you do a time-lapse of housing sprawl next to the performance of the stock market, or federal interest rates, just to see how they’re linked.

I say its time to start buying land in Vermont and developing it. I’ve always been found of McDonalds and massive strip malls myself. The market is obviously going berserk!!
