There really is nothing like good data. All I have here is a Vermont state border, a hillshade, and a forest canopy layer from the USGS. And just with that, we start to see a landscape that we understand, the forested hills of Vermont. Click here to see a larger version.
After analyzing a 30-meter digital elevation model from the Vermont Center for Geographic Information for aspect, I chose only to display southeastern, southern, and southwestern facing slopes. Southern slopes are shown in a bright orange while southeastern/western slopes are shown in a lighter shade of orange. My advice to my future self? Start looking to buy a home in those bright orange areas. The benefits of passive solar energy are enormous. Northern slopes are only good for skiing.

This image shows the difference in elevation of Mt. St. Helens after it erupted. The darkest blue represents a difference of -3,384 feet, and the darkest red represents a difference of 395 feet. My assumption is that the increase in elevation occurred because of lava flows in most areas around the mountain, but the largest increase in elevation (to the north) shows where the top of the mountain ended up. These data sets are great, and a nice resource from the USGS.
